One reason companies have resisted setting up digital capabilities for their employees is that, in the eyes of some executives, the home office is still a no-no. Managers are convinced that if employees are left unattended they’ll slack off but claim they were working. It’s this digital component of business that has kept some aspect of commerce and service up and running in a time when so many can’t work outside of their homes. 30 years ago we didn’t have this huge digital infrastructure to build a digital version of our businesses on, allow us to work from home, and stay connected with people around the world. The speed at which these legislative blockers can be addressed will influence the speed at which we are able to achieve truly digital by default services. The Digital team will ensure that content published on the GOV.UK platform is of the highest quality, and evolves in response to user needs.
This will encourage collaboration while helping teams stay informed about current issues, work to shared standards and understand the impact of what they are doing. If the product needs to be handed over to a new team, this should work as part of a planning process not a pre-determined date. It should instead involve an incremental transfer of knowledge and technology operations between teams to ensure there are no disruptions for users. Multi-skilled product teams are central to making this product-centric vision successful. Product, delivery, user research and design roles will work alongside service, engineering, test, security and operations roles. Access management is complicated as applications are often scattered across several internal and external systems, which means we must provide controlled access for a number of different identities.

What are the essentials things you need to have close to you, such as a water bottle or your cup of coffee, and what needs to be close by but can be stored away. Our main delivery centres are in Croydon, Sheffield and Manchester with satellite offices in Southport, Westminster, Liverpool, west London and north London. It takes you longer to process information, and you don’t think about the quality of your communications to others before you press send. Plus, the pain you can get in your forearm from typing and using a mouse all day can be enough to make you wonder if you can ever click a mouse button again. If you’re sticking to a schedule and a request comes up, you have a good feel for your workload and routine, so you know where you can fit an extra project based on how much time it will take and your available bandwidth. I have reviewed and given tutorials on many digital tools your teams can use to optimize working together.
The report showed the government spends £2.3bn of its total IT expenditure of £4.7bn “keeping the lights on” and patching up decades-old legacy systems – which successive administrations and civil servants have tried to tackle. Send me exclusive offers, unique gift ideas, and personalized tips for shopping and selling on Etsy. Shipping policies vary, but many of our sellers offer free shipping when you purchase from them. We're advertising for a number of roles across a variety of levels and specialisms at the Home Office within the Software Engineering profession. If a question comes up as to the progress on a project, they’ll just know the answer instead of having to ask.
7 8. Raising awareness of digital services
We will use the digital exemplar projects to raise awareness of the processes by which we can swiftly identify and understand our user needs and move quickly from a concept to delivering measurable user-benefit. Work is underway to identify the key legislative barriers to digital service development at the Home Office - the key barriers are identified in this strategy, and are barriers that are also faced by other departments. Good assisted digital will build the confidence of users to enable them to self-serve digitally in future; hence we anticipate that our assisted digital requirements will diminish over time. From January digital services must be approved by the Digital Leader, who will ensure engagement with GDS at the earliest phase in the service design process. Our presumption is that all new services and significant service enhancements will be digital. Where new online channels are being established, development will take place according to best practice in digital service delivery from the outset.

Remote workers tend to be more productive because they can more easily focus on the essentials. Only last month the government published its ‘Organising for Digital Delivery’ report, more than ten months after it was undertaken, which flagged problematic platforms in government. The Home Office was cited as a department that had failed to replace any of its legacy systems despite years of sustained effort. Etsy is no longer supporting older versions of your web browser in order to ensure that user data remains secure.

We love being able to work with our laptop on one side and a large monitor on the other to take advantage of a dual-screen setup at home. If you’re on a Mac, the Apple 32-inch Pro Display XDR is the absolute best, but it’s also a very pricey monitor. A more reasonable alternative for your home desk is the excellent LG UltraFine 27″ 5K monitor. With a single cable, it can power your MacBook pro and transmit the audio and video back to your monitor. If you’re on a laptop, a dedicated mouse will help improve your precision and speed when working from home. Telecommuting and remote working were a growing trend before they became a necessity.
This DDaT Strategy and its core principles outline how we aim to do all of this - by seizing opportunities, building the right skills and working towards the shared goals of collaboration, user-centricity and innovation. But publishing this strategy is just the start and delivering its vision will require a joint effort across the department and across government. I look forward to working with our people to embrace these digital commitments.
The geek coffee drinkers that we love the Ember Temperature Control Smart Mug. It’s simple and elegant design is beautiful, and it will keep your coffee warm for one hour. If you prefer the flexibility to work from your home office in the morning and from your kitchen table in the afternoon, a high-performance Bluetooth speaker is what you need. Our preferred choice are the beautiful yet surprisingly powerful BeoPlay P6 by Bang & Olufsen. They also come with an integrated microphone if you want to host a conference call with multiple people on your end. If you expect to do regular video calls with your colleagues while working from home, you absolutely need a pair of headphones with a decent microphone.

We have already made significant progress towards greater transparency, however, there remains substantial work to be done to embed this into Home Office culture. Where viable, we will adopt processes that support sharing our information, trial prototype services and engage in policy-thinking at an early stage. We need diverse and inclusive multidisciplinary teams that work with users and colleagues to explore problems and act on evidence to deliver better policies and outcomes for the people we serve. We will review how we can make it easier for teams to collaborate on early ideas and ensure our technology architecture and tooling is supportive. We want to make it easier for the Home Office to continue with innovative projects such as these, by creating the right environment, skills and processes to allow new ideas to be taken forward easily.
To achieve all this, we rely on talented people with a wide range of skills. This includes digital, data and technology skills, where we are seeking to increase our civil service recruitment and have plans to recruit significant numbers in Manchester, Sheffield, Croydon and Glasgow. The programme is committed to the development of a new online identity verification service. It will be aligned with the Cabinet Office Identity Assurance Programme and will provide the required level of confidence for the DBS, in line with the requirements of the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. It is expected that this capability can be reused for other citizen-focused services across the Home Office landscape.
Demand is increasing – we recorded a record high level of transactions in September 2012 when over 934k passengers used e-Gates to enter the UK. The Programme is responsible for modernising and transforming the disclosure and barring services currently provided by the CRB and ISA. The key Programme priority is the early introduction of a new portable disclosure ‘Update Service’ which will eliminate the need for individuals to apply for unnecessary repeat disclosures.
